On Tuesday, January 9th, I took 23 of my students on a field trip they won't forget for quite a while. Let me back up a bit... On Wednesday, January 3rd, I received a phone call from a representative of Colorado governor-elect Bill Ritter asking Moffat County Choir to come and perform for the inaugural ceremony. Normally, I hesitate at such short notice, but this time I jumped at the opportunity to perform on the steps of the capitol building in Denver. After loading the bus at 4:00am and driving almost 5 hours, we arrived excited to sing at such an important event. We sang on the west steps of the capitol building for 15 minutes before the ceremony started for friends and family that were already seated and waiting for the ceremony to begin. The press was already set up and we had a fun time imagining that we would be on TV or in the Denver Post. (As it turns out, we DID land a photo in the Denver Post!!!) After we sang, we were able to sit and watch the inauguration. The ceremony was held outside and we were quite frozen by the time it was over. At the conclusion of the inauguration, the choir sang for an hour on the north steps of the capitol where people were filing out of the building after going through the reception line to greet the new governor. MCHS Choir was one of 4 groups that were asked to perform - CSU Chamber Choir, Trinidad Community Choir, West High Chamber Choir (in Denver) and MCHS. We had a lot of fun attending the event and spending the day as if we were just as important as the governor himself! More than one of my students commented to me about how out of place they felt at this event. I smiled, laughed a little, agreed wholeheartedly, and told them to pretend - for just one day - that this is exactly where we belong.
